Ceremony Marks Beginning of Construction on the New Sarah Mildred Long Memorial Bridge

January 13, 2015

Dignitaries from Maine and New Hampshire gathered to celebrate the kickoff of construction for the new Sarah Mildred Long Memorial Bridge last week at the Community Center in Kittery, ME. The joint venture team of Hardesty & Hanover/Figg Engineering Group are the bridge designers, working with contractor, Cianbro, Inc.

Peter Roody, PE, and Rebecca Frein, PE, of Hardesty & Hanover attended the event along with Maine Governor Paul LePage, New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan, Maine Senator Susan Collins, New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Acting Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration Gregory Nadeau, MaineDOT staff and other state and local representatives. All those attending were invited to sign a commemorative construction trestle that will be installed as part of bridge construction.

The new $158.5 million bridge will connect Kittery, ME, and Portsmouth, NH, and will be located upriver from the existing bridge. It will include a new vertical lift bridge with a 300-foot-long lift span, providing access for vehicles, pedestrians, and rail traffic. In September 2014, a $25 million TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) Grant was awarded to Maine and New Hampshire for the rail portion of the bridge.

The bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in September of 2017.
