Hardesty & Hanover awarded three 2016 ACEC NY Awards

Hardesty & Hanover (H&H) was awarded three ACEC NY Awards at Saturday night’s annual black tie gala at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

The first award was the Silver Award for NYCDOT’s Protective Coating of the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge. Work involved removal of lead-based paint from all steel surfaces on the bascule span followed by the application of a high-performance zinc/epoxy/urethane coating system. Additionally, various repairs and safety improvements were completed including stringer crack repair, as well as the installation of new catwalks, ladders, and access hatches. The project involved 24-hour multi-shift operations, community outreach, and extensive U.S. Coast Guard coordination. H&H Construction Services completed the project four months ahead of schedule. Resident Engineer, Eugene Birgy and Project Manager, Brendan O’Shea accepted the award on behalf of H&H with NYCDOT representative, Sergey Parayev.

The second award was the Silver Award for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s Lincoln Tunnel Helix Rehabilitation. It is estimated that more than 120,000 vehicles per day utilize the Helix to enter and exit the Lincoln Tunnel. Work involved a wide variety of rehabilitation items (over 700 in total) at ten separate structures, including crack repairs, median barrier replacement, electrical conduit relocation, concrete deck rehabilitation, and the repair of concrete columns, concrete beam, and steel superstructure. Bob Eslinger and Sophia Savva accepted the award on behalf of H&H.

The third award was the prestigious Diamond Award for NYSDOT‘s Kew Gardens Interchange Contract 2A. The interchange is one of NYC’s most complex and important with more than 520,000 daily motorists. Work included reconstruction of the 50,000 square foot, 800-foot long viaduct; reconstruction ramps; two associated approach bridges; as well as, reconstruction of a three-quarters of a mile of at-grade highway. The project also included retaining walls, a new arterial maintenance building, and relocation of large utilities. Daniel Wan and Mike Liona accepted the award on behalf of H&H with NYSDOT representatives Sonia Pichardo, John Elias, Phillip Eng, and Meena Kuriakose.

H&H’s Executive Chairman, Charlie Gozdziewski, presided over the gala, in his role of chairman of ACEC NY.

The ACEC Engineering Excellence Award submissions are judged on complexity; future value to the engineering profession; original or innovative application of new or existing technologies; social, economic and sustainable design considerations; and meeting or exceeding client needs.
