It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of friend, mentor, and former partner, Mr. Richard (Dick) Christie. Mr. Christie passed away yesterday at the age of 87 after a short illness. Born in 1928, he attended the University of Michigan (BSE) and Yale University where he received his Master’s in Structural Engineering. His career began at H&H as a structural engineer in 1951 after interviewing with Shortridge Hardesty & Clinton Hanover. He was inducted as a firm partner in 1972, and retired in 2001, after almost 50 years with the firm.
Mr. Christie led many of the H&H’s signature projects, including serving as project manager on the I-95 Piscataqua River Bridge between Maine and New Hampshire and his favorite project, the Stratford Avenue Vertical Lift Bridge in Connecticut.
He won more than a dozen awards over the years for his projects, including the James F. Lincoln Foundation Award; AISC Prize Bridge Award; and the American Society of Engineers Roebling Award.
He was very active in many professional associations including the American Welding Society, American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) and the Canada Public Works/Canadian Standards Association.
A memorial service will be planned for June.
