Coney Island Parachute Jump

Project Overview - Coney Island Parachute Jump

Location: Brooklyn, New York
Client: New York City Department of Parks & Recreation

Brooklyn, New York is home to the famous structure—the Coney Island Parachute Jump. Under a contract in the early 1980’s with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Hardesty & Hanover performed a physical inspection, prepared an analysis, and made recommendations for this structure. We addressed the structural integrity, historical status and future potential of the Parachute Jump.

Hardesty & Hanover performed a structural analysis to determine the adequacy of the existing structure to withstand dead load in addition to reasonable wind loads encountered. The firm provided two options: one that included repairs and one without.

Two cable-supported motorized cages were rigged to gain access to all elements of the structure during inspection. Those elements included the six tower legs and their related bracing. The Hardesty & Hanover inspectors were required to climb out of the cages onto the structure to obtain necessary measurements and information.
