Project included two contracts—the Grand Concourse Bridge over 161st contract is a fixed bridge demolition and replacement project, and the reconstruction of Grand Concourse Blvd. H&H provided Resident Engineering Inspection (REI) services for this $41 million contract with a proposed duration of 45 months.
A critical feature of this project was the demolition of the arch structure and retaining walls at 161st St. There was also extensive repairs made to the retaining walls as well as finish wall surface treatment including artwork. Hardesty & Hanover provided third party review for NYCDOT for the demolition of the arch and wall structures.
The fixed bridge project work was performed in four stages under multiple Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) schemes. The contract involves demolition of an existing 60-ft arched, fixed bridge and the approach abutments, concrete deck, steel grating, and steel stringers. The existing concrete staircases at the east and west portals of the bridge structure were demolished and reconstructed. The construction included bridge abutments, backwalls, and soldier pile walls with rock anchor tiebacks; two new approach slabs with pressure relief joints; rehabilitation of the existing remaining concrete walls; new pedestals and installation of bridge bearings; and superstructure consisting of prefabricated inverse bridge deck and steel girders.
This project created a major public park space designated as Lou Gehrig Plaza and was transferred to the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
