Port Adelaide is an important trade gateway for South Australia, especially for exports of such commodities as grain, livestock, wine and citrus products, and motor vehicles. The Port River Expressway design-build project added a four-lane expressway link and a rail freight line to better access this port facility.
Hardesty & Hanover, as primary bridge designer for the river crossings, provided final design and construction support services for a new, 58-meter-long, four-lane, single-leaf highway bascule bridge, and a new, 61-meter-long, single-track, single-leaf rail bascule bridge. Both bascule bridges will provide a 30-m navigation channel in the Port River. The bridges employed innovative structural forms including welded box girders for the bascule spans and were completed to a high aesthetic standard through the involvement of our in-house architectural staff.
